Demchyshyn promises within two to three years to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel

Ukraine within two to three years can significantly reduce dependence on supplies of Russian nuclear fuel whose share in the Ukrainian nuclear power plant is currently at 90%.

This was at the Committee on fuel and energy complex of the Verkhovna Rada said the Minister of energy and coal industry Volodymyr demchyshyn, UNIAN reports.

«We are actively working in nuclear-industrial segment, reduce dependence in the supply of nuclear fuel. It’s my understanding the last direction in which there is a significant dependence on Russia, but I am sure that within 2-3 years this issue can be solved», — said demchyshyn.

As reported, in the framework of the diversification of sources of supply of nuclear fuel for nuclear power stations of Ukraine is planning in 2016 to buy an American-Japanese company Westinghouse over a third of fuel for nuclear power plants, whereas last year almost all fuel is imported from Russia.

In March 2015 South-Ukrainian nuclear power plant successfully completed the download of the upgraded fuel TVs-WR production Westinghouse on the third unit. In April, the NPP hooked up the unit to the grid in the country.

Earlier, the head of Westinghouse said that his company is ready to introduce her fuel for all nuclear power plants of Ukraine.

In terms of installed capacity of nuclear power units of Ukraine occupies seventh place in the world. All reactors of type VVER (water-water energy reactor).

In Ukraine there are 4 nuclear power plants with 15 generating units, one of which, Zaporizhzhya NPP with 6 reactors with a total capacity of 6000 MW is the largest in Europe.
