Court of the European Union confirmed the freezing of funds of Viktor and Alexander Yanukovych

The European court of justice in Luxembourg confirmed the freezing of funds and economic resources of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and his son Oleksandr Yanukovych for the period from 6 March 2015 to 6 March 2016. The decision was published today on the website of the court.

Viktor and Oleksandr Yanukovych appealed to the court to annul the decision of the court, which upheld the freezing of their funds.

«The court, as the General court considers that the concern of Mr. Victor Yanukovych Alexander Viktorovych Yanukovych about the impartiality of the Ukrainian judiciary cannot question the validity of the charges against them in relation to very specific cases of theft of public funds», – the document says.

In March 2014, the EU froze all funds and property of a number of Ukrainian politicians, Yanukovych times, including the ex-President of Ukraine and his son. The decision came into force from the date of publication of the list and lasted a year. Subsequently, the freeze period is extended.

Viktor Yanukovych was President of Ukraine less than four years – from 25 February 2010 to 22 February 2014. After the victory of Maidan fled from Ukraine to Russia, the Verkhovna Rada recognized it withdrew from office and not performing his duties, after which he was declared new presidential elections.

In Ukraine against Yanukovych openly some criminal proceedings. He is accused of mass killings of citizens, misappropriation of state property, the seizure of power by unconstitutional means, the actions aimed at overthrowing the constitutional order.
