Austria from January 1, began to preside in OSCE

Austria took over from Germany the presidency of the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe in 2017.

As stated on the website of the organization, OSCE Chairman, Minister of foreign Affairs of Austria will present the priorities of the Austrian presidency in Vienna at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council on January 12.

As noted by the head of the Austrian foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, the beginning of the Austrian presidency is symbolized by the three key challenges facing the OSCE. In particular, he drew attention to the sad and complicated crises and conflicts that exist in the space of the organization, a significant lack of mutual trust and confidence between the countries, as well as the exciting phenomenon of increasing radicalization and violent extremism, especially among people of the younger generation.

«We must resolutely to join and respond to this situation. The OSCE is the right platform to do that,» said Kurtz.

«It is my firm conviction that the OSCE is the Foundation for a secure Europe — especially in these troubled times. Austria is willing to take responsibility and preside for the second time in the organization for two decades,» — said the Minister.

Also, citing the experience of the OSCE as the organization of mediation, which promotes unity and harmony within the total space to 1.2 billion people, Kurz expressed the belief that the organization can provide all the necessary tools in promoting de-escalation of conflicts and create an opportunity for finding a sustainable political solution to these conflicts, and not least of the conflict around Ukraine.

«We must do everything possible to prevent further escalation of armed confrontation, including working with established frameworks for the peaceful settlement of conflicts in the OSCE region», — summed up the head of the Austrian foreign Ministry.
