Archbishop of UOC-KP Zorya about the bill for reading in Parliament, «our father»: While I see in it is merely scoff at the initiative of deputies

Submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on a reading of the prayer «our father» before the opening of each plenary session, it will be impossible to implement. This opinion in comments to the edition «GORDON» shared Archbishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate yevstratii Zoria.

«Every MP has the right to legislative initiative. And we can’t forbid it to them Given that Parliament is not only Christians, but also representatives of other religions and non-believers, it is difficult to imagine how in practice it will be possible to implement this proposal. While I can see how society just scoff at the initiative of the deputies. Secularity is its neutrality in terms of attitude to different ideological views,» – said the source.

According to him, people’s representatives, Christians should not impose other parliamentarians of their religious beliefs.

«If some MPs will pray, and others not, that’s fine. But how can you be legally obliged to pray all of them? If not a believer or belongs to another religion, the law cannot force him to turn to God in a way that is alien to him. The law cannot make a man believe what he believes. Want the deputies to pray? You have every right to. If MPs-Christians want to read the «our father» to pray. But to force other members to do it. You need to adhere to the norms of democracy,» said Zorya.

13 July, the Verkhovna Rada was submitted a draft law No. 6722 on the reading of the prayer «our father» before the opening plenary. While the text and accompanying documents to the project on the website of the Ukrainian Parliament do not exist.
