Amnesty International urged the Ukrainian authorities to guarantee the non-delivery of weapons to South Sudan

International human rights organization «Amnesty International in Ukraine,» urges the Ukrainian authorities to formulate and articulate clear policies that will guarantee non-delivery of arms and technical assistance to South Sudan. On 29 September, reported the press service of the organization.

«The Ukrainian government must prevent the ingress of Ukrainian weapons to countries where it is likely to be used for human rights violations, implementation of war crimes and crimes against humanity,» said the Director «Amnesty International in Ukraine» Oksana Pokalchuk.

Amnesty International calls on Ukraine to implement a responsible and transparent policy on arms exports.

«A number of statements made by officials in recent days, looks like a proof of Ukraine’s desire to follow the undertaken international obligations in the area of trade in arms», – emphasized in the organization.

On 25 September Amnesty International reported that in 2014, the state foreign trade firm «Ukrinmash» signed a contract with the UAE for the supply of thousands of machine guns, mortars, grenade launchers and millions of ammunition in South Sudan.

«Ukrinmash» stated that he never supplied the said arms to South Sudan.

«The contract was signed and not fulfilled,» – said the employee of the company.

On September 26, the Center for the study of corruption and organized crime OCCRP reported that the European companies supplying arms to Africa and the middle East through the Ukrainian enterprises.

On 28 September, the Secretary of the national security Council and defense Oleksandr Turchynov said that Ukraine has the right to sell arms to South Sudan because this country has not imposed any restrictions.

The independence of South Sudan was declared in 2011. Civil conflict in this country began in 2013. Then President Salva Kiir said on preventing coup d’état, accusing the organization Vice-President Rick Machar.
