Agramunt tightened before: the Russian annexation of Ukrainian Crimea – no reason to maintain sanctions

President of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , Pedro Agramunt, who on Monday January 23, elected to the new annual term, stated the need for the withdrawal of all political sanctions against the Russian delegation.

He stated that in dealing with Russian and Ukrainian journalists, reports «European true».

Agramunt expressed regret over Russia’s decision not to participate in PACE.

«Russia’s position has not changed – they’re ready to come back if they will be fully reinstated, including the right to vote and participate in the work of the committees,» he said.

«I believe that the Russians should be here in the Assembly with full rights. But not I have to make this decision – the decision which should be taken by the Assembly,» said PACE President, emphasizing that says it myself, because it does not have the authority of the Assembly for such applications.

Agramunt believes that the ongoing annexation of the Crimea Ukrainian is not a justification for maintaining the sanctions restrictions.

«I can’t personally decide whether Russia will return with full rights or not. But my point is this: one question to condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine, and we have already condemned them.

But this does not mean that we should stop the dialogue. The Council of Europe will not stand on both legs without cooperation with Russia», — said Agramunt.

We will remind, Agramunt was President of the Assembly in 2016. At the end of the year, a question was raised about how to prevent his election for a second year because of complaints about his activities, but this idea is not found sufficient support.

The PACE President during the past year have made an effort to withdraw sanctions against the Russian Federation, but did not succeed. Also, it is known that interrupted a long tradition of communication with the press in Strasbourg.
