After the mass protests of the criminal code of Romania can change through a referendum

The President of Romania Klaus iohannis said the possibility of a referendum on the government’s plan for decriminalization of some crimes, which would allow corrupt officials to avoid responsibility. About it reports Reuters.

«Unfortunately, the issue has taken on national significance. There is a very great interest in the amendments to the criminal code. If so, then I will bear this issue to public discussion and a vote,» said Iohannis.

He did not name the possible date of the referendum, in the government of this statement has not commented. For appointment of the referendum the President will also need the consent of Parliament.

«I will start the necessary procedures to allow the Romanians to Express their views on these steps, because when they voted in the elections (in December), these plans were not in the program of the ruling Social democratic party,» said Iohannis.

Recall, January 22, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in the Romanian capital Bucharest and in other major cities in protest against government plans on introducing changes to the legislation which, in the opinion of the Protestants, allow corrupt officials to avoid responsibility.

We will note, in December, the ruling coalition of Romania threatened the President with impeachment.
