The new safe confinement over the fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant will be fully commissioned in November 2017, and then begin the excavation of fuel-containing masses and its subsequent burial, said the press service of the Ministry of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine with reference to the words of the Minister of Ostap Semerak.
«A new protective structure is the first set of activities. During the year, we need to introduce a new confinement at the operation and begin work on dismantling of unstable structures. All systems must be connected and tested. You can then use the equipment installed inside the crane. First, is the dismantling of unstable structures, and in 2018 we will move on to the notch of the fuel-containing masses, deconstructing the 4-th unit of the subsequent burial», — quotes Semerak, the press service.
In turn, the head of the State Agency of Ukraine on exclusion zone management Vitaliy Petruk noted that the movement of the arch in proper position above the object «Shelter» is the most important part of the second phase of implementation of the strategy of converting the Shelter object into ecologically safe system.
«Ahead of the introduction of the new safe confinement into operation, which should be completed in November 2017. In the second phase in 2023, it is necessary to develop the infrastructure for dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter facility and to implement their removal, said Petruk. — The main mission of our strategy is to minimize the effects of a destroyed unit for the present and future generations. For the exclusion zone is a step to positive transformation and the opportunity to become a territory for industrial use»
As reported, on November 29, the construction company Novarka, to build the arch of the new safe confinement (NSC), has completed the process of navigenie and installation of fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was destroyed during the disaster, 26 April 1986.
In April 2016, the Director of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant Igor Gramotkin stated that work on the facility over the destroyed fourth unit of Chernobyl new shelter and dry storage for spent nuclear fuel (ISF-2) will be completed by the end of 2016. After all the necessary tests in 2017, the objects will be put into operation.
In may 2016 the leaders of the countries «the Big seven» have confirmed their readiness to cooperate with Ukraine in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster.
On 4 October the company «Ukrenergomontazh», part of the state building Corporation «ukrbud», completed the construction of enclosing outline, which is necessary to move the arch over the fourth unit of Chernobyl NPP.
According to the EBRD, which manages the Shelter Fund to Finance the construction of the arch and of the «Shelter» object, the value of NSC amounted to 1.5 billion euros. The implementation of the action plan on Chernobyl is estimated at 2.1 billion euros.
